Chuck’s Films

I started making short videos to solve a problem with my projects. They often include far more subjects than end up in book, exhibit or even on a website. These subjects, though unseen in the final product are very important to my understanding of what a project means. In a video, I can show everyone who generously offered to participate and can use the soundtrack to describe the project.

In order to get better at making these “project” videos I did some course work and began to make artist interviews. This revealed to me how much of my still photography owed to film. These interviews follow the same arc that I hope for in a still project. I was delighted. That was the good news. The bad news is that video does not lend itself to doing everything myself. Doing an interview when I am the director, the director of photography, the sound man, the gaffer, the grip, the interview, the editor, and the script girl is seriously stressful. I love doing them. I dread doing them.

These were done with my still projects…

Lustron Stories

125 subjects, all here.

Precious Objects

175 people share something they have had a long time, that has special meaning, and they would not replace if they lost

The Library Bureau

I would often see unused card files as I was photographing librarians with favorite books in Carnegie Libraries, Kind of a fascinating artifact in the history of libraries. I ended up restoring one and making this gadget. This might be the best 150 seconds you will spend today. In my opinion.

The Song

I spent two years photographing the kids at Rainey Institute. Rainey, an after-school arts program in Cleveland also runs a summer camp for the kids. Each day begins with The Song. In the words of Gordon Jenkins, “let the music play until there are no more songs to sing.”
