Statement
The
work explores the boundaries between the natural and the artificial.
The affects of man and the passing of time on both the natural
landscape and the constructed world of buildings, roads and
industry.
"Boundaries"
include technical/human, new-old, art-science, serene-foreboding,
developed-natural and, of course, land, coastline and shoreline and
water. In addition, they reflect the theme of how he sees people
as one more "natural" force on the environment. The perspective
is fatalistic - more comic than tragic - an acceptance of the
inevitable.
The portraiture shows the
photographer and the subject(s) attempts to modify the image to realize
their ideas of what the portraits might be. Many of the portraits are
on Polaroid materials that allow the subject to participate.
The Album Project is a joint project with his son, Isaac. Isaac has autism. When he was 15 he needed surgery for curvature of the spine. In order to help him cope, he received a Polaroid Spectra for his birthday. His photography and albums now document not just his surgery, but his life.
Because of Chuck's interest in conservation and preservation, he makes
an effort to produce and prepare his work consistent with the desire
for it to last.
